For people buying a machine just for this one game
Which console for GTA 6?
If you are coming back to console gaming purely because of GTA 6, the question is narrower than the internet makes it sound. Only four hardware families can run the game on day one, all of them are targeting the same frame rate, and the disc drive that usually splits the decision turns out not to matter for this release at all. Here is what is actually confirmed, what each machine costs, and where the real trade offs sit. We do not take money from any manufacturer and we are not recommending a brand.
The short version
Four facts do most of the work in this decision. Everything else is detail.
as of August 28, 2026
GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. No PC release date has been announced.
The physical boxed copy contains a download code, not a disc. A disc drive buys you nothing for this game.
Rockstar says the game is currently targeting 30 fps on all consoles, and a 60 fps performance mode is undecided.
The game itself costs 79.99 USD or 79.99 EUR for the Standard Edition, and 99.99 USD or 99.99 EUR for the Ultimate Edition.
What the consoles cost right now
Both manufacturers raised prices in 2026, citing memory and component costs. These are the official list prices, not what a shop is charging this week.
manufacturer list prices, as of August 28, 2026
PlayStation 5, list prices since April 2, 2026
PS5 Digital Edition at 599.99 USD and 599.99 EUR. PS5 with disc drive at 649.99 USD and 649.99 EUR. PS5 Pro at 899.99 USD and 899.99 EUR. Sony raised every model by 100 in each currency, citing pressures in the global economy, component costs and tariffs.
Xbox Series S and Series X, list prices since August 1, 2026
Series S with 512 GB at 499.99 USD and 499.99 EUR. Series S with 1 TB at 599.99 USD and 599.99 EUR. Series X 1 TB digital at 749.99 USD and 749.99 EUR. Series X 1 TB with disc drive at 799.99 USD and 799.99 EUR. The 2 TB Series X was discontinued.
Microsoft pointed at storage and memory costs, which it said had risen by more than 2.5 times, and said it expects them to roughly double again by autumn 2027. That is the second Xbox price increase in under a year.
Standard Edition 79.99 USD and 79.99 EUR, Ultimate Edition 99.99 USD and 99.99 EUR, on both the PlayStation Store and the Xbox Store. Preload starts November 12, 2026, a week before launch. Anyone buying before November 20, 2026 gets the Vintage Vice City bonus pack.
Prices are only half the picture. Three technical facts change what you are actually buying.
The three facts that actually decide this
Each of these quietly cancels a piece of advice you will read elsewhere.
There is no disc, so the disc drive is irrelevant
Rockstar confirmed in June 2026 that the physical boxed copy of GTA 6 contains a download code rather than a game disc, and that no physical Ultimate Edition exists. If you were about to pay extra for a disc drive purely for this game, that money buys you nothing. It still matters if you want to play older disc games or use the console as a Blu-ray player.
In August 2026, Rockstar co-director Rob Nelson said the game is currently targeting 30 fps on all consoles and that whether a 60 fps option arrives at launch or later still needs a technical decision. Nothing published so far promises a higher frame rate on the more expensive machines.
Rockstar has not published an install size. What is documented is how much room each machine has: the 512 GB Series S leaves about 364 GB usable for games, the 1 TB Series X about 802 GB. The PS5 ships with 1 TB and the PS5 Pro with 2 TB. PS5 consoles take a user installed M.2 NVMe drive; Xbox consoles use expansion cards or external drives, and current generation games have to run from internal or card storage.
This is where rumour and fact get mixed together most often, so we are splitting them.
Retailer bundles have appeared in the UK, where TechRadar calculated one PS5 package as bringing the game in at roughly 30 GBP against its normal price.
In the US, Best Buy has run a store credit offer for buying a console and the game together rather than a discounted bundle.
Rumours of a custom GTA 6 branded console have circulated for years. None has ever been announced.
As of today, neither Sony nor Microsoft has announced an official GTA 6 console bundle with custom hardware. What does exist is retailer bundles, meaning a shop packaging an ordinary console with a copy of the game and knocking something off the total. Those come and go, vary by country, and are not announcements from the manufacturers.
PlayStation does have a marketing partnership around the game. Sony has run messaging that the game plays best on PS5, and preordering on the PlayStation Store includes a free month of GTA+. Take-Two boss Strauss Fitzgerald Zelnick has said publicly that the console launch window is not tied to that marketing deal, so read the partnership as advertising rather than as anything technical.
Black Friday is eight days after launch
This is the timing question almost every buyer asks, so here is the calendar and an honest read on it.
Playing on day one costs whatever the console lists for on November 19.
Waiting until November 27 risks stock shortages on the exact model you want, which is a genuine cost if the game is the reason you are buying.
Preload opens November 12, so buying the hardware early also gives you time to download before launch night.
GTA 6 launches Thursday, November 19, 2026. Black Friday falls on Friday, November 27, 2026, eight days later. That is unusually tight, and it does create a real decision: buy hardware at list price to play on day one, or wait a week and a bit.
What history suggests, and we are labelling this as an estimate rather than a fact: console hardware and bundles are routinely discounted around Black Friday, while brand new full price releases in their first fortnight usually are not. If that pattern holds, waiting could plausibly save money on the machine and save little or nothing on the game.
Reading the options without picking a winner
We are not going to tell you which brand to buy. We can lay out what each choice actually gets you and what the open questions are.
Cheapest confirmed route to playing GTA 6: the 512 GB Xbox Series S at 499.99 USD or 499.99 EUR plus the 79.99 Standard Edition. The open question is whether roughly 364 GB of usable space is comfortable once the game and a system update land, given no install size has been published.
Middle of the range: the PS5 Digital Edition at 599.99, the 1 TB Series S at 599.99, or the digital Series X at 749.99. Since the game ships as a code, the digital versions of each machine lose you nothing for this title specifically.
Top of the range: PS5 Pro at 899.99 or Series X with disc drive at 799.99. Neither manufacturer has published GTA 6 performance figures for these machines, so what the extra money delivers for this game is currently unknown.
Ecosystem, not hardware, is the factor nobody quantifies: where your friends play, which subscription you already pay for, which controller you already own.
FAQ
Can I play GTA 6 on the cheapest console?
Yes. GTA 6 launches on the full Xbox Series X|S line, which includes the 512 GB Series S at 499.99 USD or 499.99 EUR, the cheapest machine that runs it. Take-Two boss Strauss Fitzgerald Zelnick has said he is not worried about the Series S version. Rockstar has not published an install size, so how comfortably it fits in roughly 364 GB of usable space is still an open question.
Is it worth waiting for Black Friday?
Black Friday 2026 falls on November 27, eight days after launch. Console hardware is historically discounted at that time while brand new games usually are not, so waiting may save on the machine rather than the game. That is our read on past patterns, not an announced deal, and stock on popular models can tighten.
Are there official GTA 6 console bundles?
Not from Sony or Microsoft as of August 28, 2026. Retailers in some countries have packaged an ordinary console with a copy of the game, and those offers change constantly. Any rumour of custom GTA 6 branded hardware is unconfirmed.
Does GTA 6 run on PC?
Not at launch, and no PC release date has been announced. Take-Two has said Rockstar goes to console first because that is where its core audience is. Rockstar's history with earlier GTA games makes a later PC version likely, but nothing about it is confirmed.
Do I need a console with a disc drive?
Not for this game. Rockstar confirmed the physical boxed copy contains a download code rather than a disc, and there is no physical Ultimate Edition. A disc drive only matters if you want to play older disc based games or use the console as a Blu-ray player.
Will GTA 6 look or run better on PS5 Pro?
Unknown. Rockstar has said the game is currently targeting 30 fps on all consoles, and no per console performance figures have been published. The PS5 Pro has a stronger GPU, but nothing official states what that delivers in GTA 6, and Rockstar has said details will come closer to launch. On storage you can at least plan with hard numbers: 364 GB usable on the 512 GB Series S, about 802 GB on the 1 TB Series X, 1 TB in a PS5 and 2 TB in a PS5 Pro.
