GTA 6 for parents: ratings, content and console controls

GTA 6 is an adult game, and as of today no final age rating exists in the United States, Europe or Germany. The only completed official classification we could verify is Australia's MA 15+ with a long list of content warnings. The ESRB database has no entry for the game yet, PlayStation displays it as Rating Pending with a likely Mature 17+, and Germany's USK has not rated it at all.

Where the age ratings actually stand

Four boards, four different states. This is the part most articles get wrong by presenting expectations as facts.

ESRB, United States and Canada: no entry yet

A search of the ESRB rating database returns no entry for Grand Theft Auto VI. The rating has not been issued. PlayStation's own store page shows the game as ESRB Rating Pending with the note Mature 17+, which is a publisher expectation and not a decision by the board.

PEGI, Europe: provisional only

There is no final PEGI entry for the game. PlayStation UK shows a provisional PEGI 18, which PEGI generates automatically from the publisher's own content questionnaire. PEGI administrators review the finished game before that becomes final.

USK, Germany: not rated

The USK database shows the title as pending. The USK requires a build that can be played from start to finish before it can rate a game, and the timing of a submission is decided by the publisher, not by the USK. Stores in Germany are treating the game as an 18 title in the meantime.

Australia: classified MA 15+

The Australian Classification Board has classified the game MA 15+ with consumer advice covering strong violence, strong sexual references, sexualised imagery, strong nudity, strong sex scenes, strong coarse language and strong crude humour. This is the most detailed official content statement available today.

What is officially known about the content

Nobody outside Rockstar has played the finished game, so the honest sources are the classification advice and the series precedent.

as of August 28, 2026

The Australian consumer advice is the closest thing to an official content list: strong violence, strong sexual references, sexualised imagery, strong nudity, strong sex scenes, strong coarse language and strong crude humour.

For comparison, GTA 5 carries the ESRB descriptors blood and gore, intense violence, mature humor, nudity, strong language, strong sexual content, and use of drugs and alcohol. Rockstar has given no indication that GTA 6 moves away from that.

The premise itself is criminal. Rockstar's official synopsis describes two protagonists, Jason and Lucia, whose easy score goes wrong and who end up inside a criminal conspiracy across the state of Leonida. The player commits the crimes rather than watching them.

Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol.

Online contact and spending

For many parents this matters more than the on screen content, because it is the part involving strangers and money.

Both consoles let you decide this in advance rather than reacting to it.

What you can control on PlayStation 5

The controls live in the console settings and in the separate PlayStation Family app for iOS and Android.

as of August 28, 2026

Age level for games and apps

A child account can only start games and apps whose age rating is equal to or below the level you set. This is the setting that actually blocks a title like GTA 6, and it works independently of who bought the game.

Play time

You can set play time limits per day of the week. A child can request extra time from the console, and you approve or decline it from your phone.

Communication and spending

Text messaging and voice chat with other players can be restricted, and you can set a monthly spending limit for the PlayStation Store alongside viewing the account balance.

Visibility

The Family app sends notifications about what is being played and produces daily and weekly activity reports, which is usually more useful than a hard block on its own.

What you can control on Xbox Series X and S

Xbox ties this to a Microsoft family group, managed from the console or the Xbox Family Settings app.

as of August 28, 2026

Content restrictions by age

Each child in the family group gets age appropriate limits for content, privacy and purchases. A title above the set age level will not launch on their account.

Screen time across devices

Time limits set in the Microsoft family group are shared across Xbox consoles and Windows devices, and you can also limit a single specific game or app.

Ask a Parent for purchases

When a child tries to buy a game or add on, you get an email request and the purchase only goes through if you fund it.

Communication and privacy

Multiplayer, messaging and who can contact the account are set per child in the online safety and privacy settings.

FAQ

What age rating does GTA 6 have?
No final rating exists yet in the US, Europe or Germany. Australia has classified it MA 15+. The ESRB has no database entry, PlayStation shows Rating Pending with a likely Mature 17+, and the USK has not rated it.
Will GTA 6 be USK 18 in Germany?
Very likely, since every mainline Grand Theft Auto has been. It is not confirmed. The USK needs a fully playable build to rate a game, and the submission timing is up to the publisher.
Is GTA 6 suitable for a 13 year old?
No rating board in Europe or North America has suggested anything below 15, and the Australian consumer advice lists strong violence, strong nudity, strong sex scenes and strong coarse language. Treat it as an adult game.
Can my child talk to strangers in GTA 6?
Not at launch as far as is known. Rockstar describes GTA 6 as a single player experience and has said nothing about an online mode on day one. That is likely to change later, so set communication controls now.
Can I stop my child from playing a game I already own?
Yes, on both consoles. The age level restriction applies to the child's account regardless of who purchased the game, so an M or 18 rated title will not launch for them.
What is the single most effective setting?
Making sure the child uses a child account rather than an adult profile. Every other control on PS5 and Xbox depends on that one thing being right.
