On August 27, 2026, Rockstar showed roughly 26 minutes of Grand Theft Auto VI. Combat was rebuilt, stealing a car now depends on which tool you carry, and control passes between Jason and Lucia instantly while they are together. This page sorts the confirmed details by system and names a source for each one. Where outlets disagree or where something was reported rather than stated, we say so instead of smoothing it over.
What the Extended Look was, and what it was not
Two separate things happened on the same day, and most articles blend them into one. Knowing which is which explains why some details are nowhere in the video.

The video. Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, roughly 26 minutes long, premiered on Netflix at 3 p.m. ET and reached the Rockstar Games YouTube channel and the official site six hours later.
The footage. Rockstar says everything was captured in game on a standard PlayStation 5, not on a PC and not on special hardware.
The previews. Separately, press and creators were shown gameplay in person at Rockstar North under embargo, and their coverage went live the same day. Several widely quoted details come from those sessions and are not visible in the video at all.
Netflix only showed the video, you cannot play GTA 6 there, and that mix up has its own page.
With that split in mind, here is what actually changed.
The combat system was rebuilt
This is the change nearly every preview leads with. GTA 5 built its shooting around lock on aiming, and what was shown works on a different principle.
Aiming and cover
Free aim carries the system now rather than lock on, sitting on top of modern cover based third person shooting. Reporters describe peek and shoot to lay down covering fire instead of the old pop out and snap to target rhythm.
TheGamer puts it bluntly and calls combat a big improvement over GTA 5, similar to Red Dead Redemption 2 with a hint of Max Payne 3. That is a writer's read on footage and not a Rockstar statement, so weigh it as an impression.
A slow motion aiming mode was shown, with highlighted weak spots on enemies to aim at. How it is triggered, whether it drains a meter, and whether it is tied to a character was not explained.
Engadget's breakdown describes a close quarters kill where Lucia uses her heel as the weapon, so melee and improvised violence are part of the same toolkit.
The second rebuilt system decides how you get into a car in the first place.
Stealing a car now takes the right tool
In every previous GTA, a car was a car. Now the vehicle decides which tool you need, and the tool decides how much noise you make.
Two ways into the same car
When Jason approaches a parked sports car, the game offers a choice. Use a slim jim to get in slowly and quietly, or smash the driver's side window for a fast theft that draws attention.
Older vehicles open with relatively simple equipment such as a slim jim. Modern luxury cars can require advanced devices such as key cloning tools, because their locks are modelled on real world electronics.
GamesRadar summed up the studio's position in its headline: GTA 6 will not let you magically hotwire every car, because you acquire certain tools to get into them. That is the principle stated plainly, without the unlock rules attached.
TheGamer notes you no longer have to break a window to jack a car. That matters because the game tracks how you behave over time, so a loud theft feeds the same systems that watch your crimes.
GTA 5 had three protagonists and a swap that always felt like a loading screen dressed up as a camera move. This works differently, and it depends on where the two of them are.
Instant while they are together
When Jason and Lucia are in the same place, control passes between them immediately. There is no transition to sit through.
The partner does not stand around. TheGamer describes whoever you are not controlling shooting alongside you and helping rob people, plus a moment where the player swaps to Lucia to handle the getaway.
Push Square lists player decisions shaping how Jason and Lucia stand with each other. How far that reaches, and whether it changes the ending, was not shown or explained.
Much of what the pair were shown doing together sits well below the level of a heist.
Small robberies are a real part of the game
The big scores are still in there, but the video gave real screen time to the bottom rung of the ladder.
What actually got robbed on screen
Convenience stores, gas stations and a phone shop appear in the footage, plus a diner sequence with the pair in bandanas. SVG's read is that low level freeform crime plays a much bigger role in GTA 6 than it did before.
Vice's roundup names stealing and selling vehicles, robbing businesses, holding up stores and completing bank heists as the routes to money. That spans the whole range from a till to a vault.
Presented as something you do, not something you are handed
Engadget describes robbing small shops and convenience stores with bandanas up and guns drawn as part of the flow of play rather than a scripted mission beat.
This part of the presentation was a parade rather than a systems explanation. Read every entry below as confirmed to exist and nothing more than that.
Scuba diving and going underwater
Weight training, with Lucia shown testing herself on a bench press
Rally racing, plus races on everything from sports cars to dirt bikes
E-scooters as a way to get around
Jet skis, fan boats and kayaking on the water
Base jumping off skyscrapers, parachuting, and a parasailing trip
Basketball, pool and mini golf
Clubbing, relaxing at home with a drink and the TV on, and eating, which affects how your character looks
Where this list comes from
TheGamer names e-scooters, rally racing, diving and working out directly. Push Square groups races, jet skis, weight lifting and scuba diving under side activities. Vice's roundup adds pool, mini golf, kayaking, parachuting and a trip to the zoo.
Three connected systems were shown, and together they are the reason a quiet car theft is worth the extra step.
You can pet a dog, and the game notices
Petting a dog awards positive karma, confirmed on screen by a small icon and a notification sound. Crimes push the same meter the other way. It reads as the Red Dead Redemption 2 interaction system carried across.
Separate from karma, the game builds a profile out of your actions in free roam, including whether you use unnecessary violence during missions. Unlike wanted stars, it does not clear back to zero.
Cops no longer appear on the minimap. Losing them can mean a change of clothes or even a haircut, because the police hold on to a description of your appearance and your vehicle.
The star meter in the chase footage reads as six stars, which would be a return to the maximum the series used before GTA 5. Outlined stars are described as police searching for you without a confirmed description.
This is where a lot of Extended Look articles quietly overreach, because the region names were public long before this video went out.
Vice City, the Miami style urban centre and the heart of the map
Leonida Keys, a tropical island chain modelled on the Florida Keys
Grassrivers, swampland and waterways inspired by the Everglades
Port Gellhorn, a coastal town in decline, full of cheap motels and shut down attractions
Ambrosia, a rural industrial county built around the Allied Crystal sugar refinery and a local biker gang
Mount Kalaga National Park, the wilderness forming the northern edge of the state
Where these names actually come from
All six were confirmed through Rockstar's own trailers, postcards and official site material before August 2026. Screen Rant and GTABase both trace the names and their descriptions back to that official material rather than to the Extended Look.
Engadget's description of the footage covers Leonida Keys, swampland, at least one national park and a seaside port, all inside the fictional state of Leonida. That is the known map shown in motion, not a set of new places being announced.
The video answered a lot about how the game plays and almost nothing about the things people ask before they spend money.

FAQ
How long is the GTA 6 Extended Look?
Around 26 minutes, though some outlets report 27. It premiered on Netflix on August 27, 2026 at 3 p.m. ET and reached Rockstar's YouTube channel and official site six hours later.
What is the biggest change shown in the Extended Look?
Two things. Combat moved to free aim with modern cover shooting, bullet time and non lethal takedowns, and stealing a car now depends on carrying the right tool rather than always smashing a window.
Can you still break a car window in GTA 6?
Yes, but it is now a choice with a cost. A slim jim opens older cars quietly, modern luxury cars can need key cloning tools, and smashing the window is the fast option that draws attention.
How does switching between Jason and Lucia work?
Instantly while they are together. When they are apart, a short bird's eye transition plays instead. The character you are not controlling keeps acting, shooting alongside you and helping during robberies.
Were 150 new details really revealed?
That figure is Vice's own count, and it adds the video together with hands off press previews held at Rockstar North. It is not a Rockstar number and there is no official list behind it.
Did the Extended Look reveal new locations?
Not really. Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park were already confirmed through earlier Rockstar material. The video showed them running rather than announcing them.
