GTA 6 file size and preload: how much space to clear
Plan for 150 to 200 GB, and clear a little more than that. Rockstar has not published an official install size for GTA 6, so the range you see everywhere is an informed estimate rather than a confirmed number. The preload date is not an estimate: Rockstar confirmed November 12, 2026 from midnight local time, one week before the November 19 launch, the same pattern it used for Red Dead Redemption 2.
The numbers, and how solid they are
Two figures matter for planning. The date is confirmed by Rockstar, the size is not.
as of August 28, 2026
Expected install size: about 150 to 200 GB on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S. Estimate, not confirmed.
Confirmed preload start: November 12, 2026 for digital buyers, from midnight local time. Announced by Rockstar, not an estimate.
Confirmed release: November 19, 2026, PS5 and Xbox Series X and S only.
Precedent: Red Dead Redemption 2 opened preload on October 19, 2018, exactly one week before release, at 99 GB on PS4 and 107 GB on Xbox One.
Preload date confirmed
Rockstar confirmed that digital buyers can start the preload on November 12, 2026, beginning at midnight local time.
Work through this in order. The first two steps are free, the third costs money.

Open Settings, then Storage, and sort your installed games by size. Two or three abandoned live service games usually cover the whole GTA 6 install.
Move PS4 games to a USB drive. PS4 titles run directly from USB extended storage, so this is a clean win with no downside.
Move PS5 games you are not playing to USB as cold storage. Important limit: PS5 games cannot be launched from USB. To play one again you have to copy it back to internal storage, which is still faster than downloading it.
If you want permanent room, install an M.2 SSD in the expansion slot. PS5 games can be downloaded, updated and launched directly from an M.2 drive, which USB cannot do.
The USB rule in one line
USB extended storage stores PS5 games but cannot run them. PS4 games run from USB without restriction.
Same logic, different hardware rules. The Series S needs the most planning.

Open Settings, then System, then Storage devices, and clear the largest installs first.
Move Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games to a USB 3.1 drive. Those play directly from USB, so nothing is lost.
You can also park Series X and S optimized games on a USB drive, but they cannot be played from it. They have to be moved back to internal storage or to an expansion card first.
For a permanent fix, use the Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X and S. It comes in 512 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB, plugs into the port on the back, and runs optimized titles at internal SSD speed.
Where optimized games are allowed to live
Titles marked Optimized for Xbox Series X and S must be installed on internal storage or on the Storage Expansion Card in order to run.
The current generation ties fast loading to the internal SSD architecture, so USB drives are treated as an archive rather than a play surface for new titles.
There is no official figure. The expected range is 150 to 200 GB on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S. Rockstar usually confirms the real number in the weeks before launch.
When does GTA 6 preload start?
On November 12, 2026, from midnight local time. Rockstar confirmed that date, one week before the November 19 release. Red Dead Redemption 2 opened preload exactly one week ahead in 2018, so the pattern held.
How much space should I actually clear?
Clear at least 200 GB, and 250 GB if you can. Day one patches and later updates need room on top of the base install.
Will GTA 6 fit on an Xbox Series S?
It should fit, but barely. The Series S has about 364 GB usable, so a 150 to 200 GB install takes roughly half the console. An expansion card is the comfortable answer.
Can I install GTA 6 on an external USB drive?
You can store it there, but not play it from there. On PS5, current generation games have to be copied back to internal or M.2 storage. On Xbox, optimized titles run only from internal storage or the Storage Expansion Card.
Does the disc version need less space?
No. The boxed edition of GTA 6 ships with a download code rather than a game disc, so you download and install the full game either way. Same storage, same download.
