GTA 6 Characters: Jason and Lucia

GTA 6 has two playable protagonists, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. Rockstar has published short official bios for both, a synopsis of what puts them on the run, and, in August 2026, its first on the record interviews about how they work in play. Everything on this page comes from those sources. We do not use leaked material, and we do not guess at the story.

The two playable leads

Both bios below are Rockstar's own framing from the official Grand Theft Auto VI site, condensed. Rockstar has deliberately kept them short.

as of August 28, 2026

Jason Duval

Jason grew up around grifters and crooks, did a stint in the Army to get away from a troubled adolescence, and ended up in the Leonida Keys working for local drug runners. Rockstar's line is that Jason wants an easy life but things just keep getting harder, and that meeting Lucia could turn out to be the best or the worst thing that ever happened to him.

Lucia Caminos

Lucia's father taught her to fight as soon as she could walk, and fighting for her family is what landed her in the Leonida Penitentiary. Her family's roots trace back to Liberty City. Rockstar's line is that she wants the good life her mother always dreamed of, on her own terms.

What puts them together

Rockstar's official synopsis has an easy score go wrong, leaving the two at the center of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida and forced to rely on each other to make it out alive. That is the extent of the plot Rockstar has published.

How the two of them work in play

In August 2026, ahead of the Extended Look, Rockstar gave its first on the record interviews about GTA 6, to Dazed. That is where the concrete gameplay detail below comes from, rather than from analysis of trailer footage.

You can switch between them freely

Rockstar confirmed players can swap between Jason and Lucia, including mid scene. The framing given was that you can choose to play as a couple or go off and cause chaos independently.

The relationship is the frame of the story

Rupert Humphries, Rockstar's senior vice president of narrative, described a Bonnie and Clyde type narrative at the center of the game. Jason and Lucia are the first romantic pair to lead a Grand Theft Auto game.

Who spoke, and why it counts

The interviews ran in Dazed's autumn issue and included Rockstar North co studio head Rob Nelson and Humphries. These are named Rockstar staff speaking on the record, which puts this material in a different category from anything attributed to unnamed sources.

One detail about Lucia gets stated wrongly almost everywhere, so it is worth doing properly.

Is Lucia the first female protagonist in GTA?

The accurate version is narrower than the headline. Lucia is the first female lead of a mainline Grand Theft Auto story: written, voiced, named, and carrying the plot. That is genuinely a first, and it is the thing worth saying.

She is not literally the first playable female character in the series. The original 1997 Grand Theft Auto let you pick from a roster of avatars that included female ones, and GTA Online has always allowed a female created character. Those are selectable skins and player creations, not written protagonists. No voice, no arc, no name that means anything.

So both of these are true at the same time: Lucia is a first, and the people correcting you about GTA 1 are also technically right. The distinction is between a playable body and a written lead.

The historical detail

The 1997 original included four selectable female characters with no distinct personalities, voice lines or storylines. Lucia is the first fully written and voiced female lead in the mainline series.

Everyone else Rockstar has named, and what is still missing

Beyond the two leads, Rockstar has put names to a small supporting cast through its trailers and its own site. Names are all you get, plus a line or two each.

What Rockstar has not published is just as worth knowing. There is no cast list. Rockstar has not confirmed a single voice actor for GTA 6, including for Jason and Lucia. The names circulating for those two roles are fan casting, not confirmations, and Rockstar has historically revealed casts at launch or in the credits rather than months ahead.

FAQ

Who are the main characters in GTA 6?
Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, both playable. Rockstar has published a short official bio for each and describes them as a couple caught in a criminal conspiracy across the state of Leonida.
Can you switch between Jason and Lucia?
Yes. Rockstar confirmed in August 2026 that players can swap between them, including mid scene, and can either play them as a couple or send them off separately.
Is Lucia the first female GTA protagonist?
She is the first written and voiced female lead of a mainline Grand Theft Auto story. The 1997 original had selectable female avatars without voices or storylines, and GTA Online lets you create a female character, so she is not the first playable female character in a literal sense.
Who voices Jason and Lucia?
Rockstar has not announced any voice actor for GTA 6. Names circulating online are fan casting. Rockstar usually reveals its cast at launch or in the credits.
What other characters are confirmed?
Rockstar has named Cal Hampton, Boobie Ike, Raul Bautista, Brian Heder, DreQuan Priest and the rap duo Real Dimez. Beyond a line or two each, no further official detail has been published.
What is the GTA 6 story about?
Rockstar's official synopsis has an easy score go wrong, putting Jason and Lucia at the center of a criminal conspiracy across Leonida and forcing them to rely on each other. Rockstar has published nothing beyond that.
