Nothing announced, and the precedent points the other way
Does your GTA Online progress transfer to GTA 6?
Short version: no transfer of your GTA Online character, money, cars or properties into GTA 6 has ever been announced. There is also nothing announced to transfer into, because Rockstar describes GTA 6 as a single player experience for its November 19, 2026 launch. Meanwhile GTA Online, which runs on GTA 5, is staying online. This page separates what Rockstar has actually said from what a lot of videos and articles imply.
The short answer
Four facts do most of the work here. Read them as four separate things, because most of the confusion comes from blending them.
as of August 28, 2026
No transfer announced. Rockstar has never said that your GTA Online character, GTA$, vehicles, properties or rank will carry into GTA 6.
Nothing to transfer into. Rockstar calls GTA 6 a single player experience for launch, and no GTA 6 online mode has been announced, dated or described.
GTA Online is not being switched off. Take-Two said in August 2026 that it expects to keep supporting GTA Online, which sits on GTA 5.
The precedent runs one way. Rockstar has never carried player progress from one game into the next one.
There is no GTA 6 online mode to transfer into
GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
No GTA 6 online mode has an announcement, a name or a release window.
Rockstar has not committed to whether a future online mode would be free, paid or subscription based.
The question assumes a destination that does not exist yet. On June 24, 2026, alongside the release date, Rockstar's wording on the PlayStation Store FAQ was that GTA 6 is a single player experience. No online component was named, dated or described in that announcement.
That leaves the transfer question with nowhere to land. Before anyone can move a character across, there has to be something to move it into, and Rockstar has not confirmed that thing exists. Bloomberg's Jason Schreier reported that Rockstar has not been talking about the next generation of GTA Online or its monetization, and does not plan to soon.
Which brings us to the migration that does exist, and that people keep mistaking for this one.
What Rockstar actually built, and why people mix it up
Rockstar does run save migrations. Every single one of them happens inside GTA 5, between versions of the same game. None of them crosses into a different game, and that distinction is where most wrong answers come from.
PS4 and Xbox One to the current consoles
Players could move their GTA Online character to PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S. It is a one time migration per profile that cannot be repeated. This is a version upgrade of GTA 5, not a jump into a new title.
GTA$ you bought with real money only moves within the same console family, so PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5 or Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S. Money you earned in game travels more freely. Profiles cannot move between the PlayStation and Xbox families or to PC.
Rockstar documents a second migration path on PC, from GTA V Legacy to GTA V Enhanced, in its own support article. Again, both sides of that move are GTA 5.
The precedent, and the fresh start that was never confirmed
There is history to look at, and there is a widely repeated claim that turns out to be softer than it reads.
GTA 4 to GTA Online was a clean slate
GTA 4 had its own multiplayer. None of that progress moved into GTA 5 or GTA Online in 2013. Red Dead Online later launched the same way, as a separate fresh start rather than a continuation of the original Red Dead Redemption's multiplayer.
The often quoted fresh start article is fan speculation
A February 2024 piece that gets cited as proof of no crossover is built on a Reddit argument, and it says plainly that Rockstar had not publicly commented. The conclusion may well be right. It is still not a Rockstar statement, and it should not be presented as one.
In December 2025 a GTA Online cutscene told a character to lay low and go off the grid, and transfer theories spread from that. Coverage at the time noted Rockstar had said nothing about moving progress between versions. A line of NPC dialogue is not a roadmap.
GTA Online is not shutting down when GTA 6 arrives. Take-Two's CEO said in August 2026 that support is expected to continue.
Buying Shark Cards is reasonable if you want things in GTA Online now, and a bad bet if you are stockpiling for GTA 6.
No returning player bonus, legacy reward or loyalty carry over has been announced. Every version of that story circulating is unconfirmed.
GTA$ you bought stays where you spent the money, in GTA Online. No conversion, refund or exchange into GTA 6 has been announced, and no mechanism for one has been described. Treat any purchase you make now as spending on GTA Online only, because that is the only thing it is confirmed to buy.
There is a small detail that makes the separation unusually clear. GTA 6 digital pre orders come with a month of GTA+, and those GTA+ benefits pay into GTA Online, not into GTA 6. Rockstar is bundling a perk for the older game with the new one, which is the opposite of merging the two.
FAQ
Will my GTA Online character transfer to GTA 6?
No transfer has been announced. Rockstar has never said that characters move from GTA Online into GTA 6, and GTA 6 has no announced online mode for a character to exist in.
Does my GTA Online money carry over to GTA 6?
No carry over of GTA$ has been announced, whether you earned it or bought it. Your balance stays in GTA Online on GTA 5.
Should I still buy Shark Cards before GTA 6 launches?
Only if you want the money for GTA Online itself. There is no announced way to convert or move purchased GTA$ into GTA 6, so buying as an investment for the new game has nothing behind it.
Will GTA Online shut down when GTA 6 comes out?
No shutdown has been announced. Take-Two's CEO said in August 2026 that the company expects to keep supporting GTA Online, which runs on GTA 5.
Rockstar let me move my character from PS4 to PS5, so why not to GTA 6?
That migration moves a save between versions of GTA 5, not between two different games. Even inside GTA 5, purchased GTA$ only moves within the same console family.
Is GTA 6 getting an online mode at all?
Nothing is announced. Rockstar describes GTA 6 as a single player experience for its November 19, 2026 launch and has not named, dated or described an online component.
