Kotaku measured this on retail hardware at the console launch, and the figure has been the standing reference ever since. For comparison, the 1 TB Series X leaves around 802 GB, so the Series S gives up a noticeably larger share of its drive.
Microsoft released the Series S in Carbon Black with a 1 TB drive on September 1, 2023, at 349.99 US dollars. Microsoft does not publish a usable figure for it. Expect the same kind of system reservation as on the 512 GB model, which means clearly less than a full terabyte in practice. Treat that as an expectation, not a measurement.
Nothing is confirmed. Rockstar has not stated an install size, and the estimates you find range from roughly 140 GB to 250 GB, with most guesses clustering just under 200 GB. Those numbers trace back to community forum threads and comparisons with Red Dead Redemption 2, which is around 150 GB on PC. They are not leaks and not insider information, they are arithmetic done by fans.
As of today the Xbox store page for Grand Theft Auto VI lists the price, the editions and the Optimized for Xbox Series X|S badge, but no approximate size. Your options, weighed honestly
Option one costs nothing: delete games. On a 512 GB Series S with around 364 GB usable, uninstalling two or three big modern titles typically frees more space than any accessory you could buy on short notice. Your saves stay in the cloud and your licences stay on your account, so a deleted game is a redownload, not a loss. If you are on the 512 GB model and you want GTA 6 on day one, plan on this regardless of what else you do.

During a studio visit in late August 2026, Rockstar North head of development and co-director Rob Nelson ran the game with a frame counter on screen and it sat at 30 frames per second.
