Hands-off is not a verdict

GTA 6 Previews

Between August 26 and August 28, 2026 a wave of GTA 6 previews went live and a lot of people read them as early reviews. They are not. Every one of them came out of a hands-off session, which means the press watched someone from Rockstar play and took notes. Nobody outside the studio has touched a controller. This page separates what was demonstrated from what was tested, names the outlets that were in the room, and says plainly what is still unknown.

Preview, hands-on, review: three different things

These three words get used as if they were interchangeable. They describe completely different levels of evidence, and the difference is the whole point of this page.

So who was actually in the room.

Who was in the room, and what they published

Rockstar invited a mix of press and creators to Rockstar North in Edinburgh, reportedly back in July 2026, and held the embargo until the Netflix Extended Look had aired on August 27. That is why so many previews landed within the same hour.

IGN, roughly 30 minutes

IGN published an exclusive preview built on an in person demonstration of about 30 minutes, run by Rockstar North co studio head Rob Nelson. The framing throughout is scale rather than judgement, because there was nothing to judge in the usual sense.

TGG, roughly two and a half hours

The YouTuber TGG got by far the longest session of anyone, around two and a half hours, and still did not play. His account leans on how reactive the world felt, which is exactly the kind of claim a viewer cannot verify without a controller.

The New York Times, an interview rather than a demo

The New York Times ran a piece centred on Rob Nelson, in which he described his own playthrough earlier in the year taking roughly 80 hours across the main story plus optional objectives. That is a developer describing his own save file, not a measurement anyone independent has made.

Kotaku, reporting on other people's previews

Kotaku's map size and frame rate pieces from August 27 are aggregation. The figures come from what Rob Nelson told attendees such as TGG and the creator Davy Jones, and Kotaku says so. Useful, but one step further from the source than it looks.

Everyone else in the same wave

Roundups of the wave also name Kinda Funny, Flow Games, the French outlet Trois Couleurs and the creator Davy Jones. Separately, Rockstar gave an interview to Dazed with further detail, which is a press interview rather than a preview and should be counted as such.

The dissenting note

Not every impression was glowing. At least one writer praised the production density while calling the underlying mechanics familiar, and was open about not being able to judge how driving or shooting feels from watching a screen. That reservation is the most honest thing in the whole wave.

The claims that came out of the previews

These are the numbers everyone repeated. Each one traces back to a Rockstar representative talking to attendees, not to independent testing, and Rockstar has not published most of them itself.

as of August 28, 2026

Map size: about twice GTA 5

Attendees were told the map is roughly twice the size of GTA 5 and around three times the playable space of Red Dead Redemption 2, with Vice City itself about twice the size of Los Santos. These are studio figures repeated by attendees, not a measurement.

Campaign length: around 80 hours

The 80 hour figure is Rob Nelson describing his own run through the main story with some optional content. Treat it as a developer anecdote. Story length varies wildly by player, and no independent playthrough exists to check it against.

30 frames per second, unconfirmed

The 30 fps claim comes from a creator relaying what he was told at the event, and Rockstar has not confirmed a frame rate target publicly. A 60 fps performance mode was described as uncertain, possibly not at launch and possibly not at all. Everything here is secondhand.

No first person mode at launch, unconfirmed

Several previews report that first person gameplay will not be in the game at launch. Rockstar has not confirmed this either way, so it sits in the same bucket as the frame rate: widely repeated, not official.

When do actual reviews arrive?

Rockstar has not announced a review embargo date for GTA 6, and as of August 28, 2026 there is no confirmed plan for review copies. Anything you read about a specific review date is speculation.

What we can do is show you the precedent, clearly labelled as precedent and not as a promise. Rockstar has historically kept reviews extremely close to launch, which limits how much time critics get and how long buyers can wait before deciding.

What still cannot be judged

Worth keeping in mind before the next wave of confident takes.

FAQ

Has anyone played GTA 6 yet?
Nobody outside Rockstar. The August 2026 previews were hands-off sessions at Rockstar North where the press watched a developer play. Reports from the event describe attendees who were not able to touch the game.
Is there a GTA 6 review?
No. There are no reviews, no scores and no review copies confirmed. Anything presenting itself as a GTA 6 review as of August 28, 2026 is a preview relabelled or an invention.
What is the difference between a preview and a review?
A preview describes a controlled demonstration chosen by the publisher. A review is a judgement of the finished game after playing it. Only the second one tells you whether the game is good.
Which outlets got a GTA 6 preview?
The wave included IGN, The New York Times, Kinda Funny, Flow Games, the French outlet Trois Couleurs and creators including TGG and Davy Jones. Kotaku and many others reported on those previews rather than attending.
When will GTA 6 reviews come out?
Not announced. For historical context only, the GTA 5 embargo lifted one day before release in 2013 and Red Dead Redemption 2 did the same in 2018. If that pattern repeats, reviews would land around November 18, 2026, but Rockstar has promised nothing.
Is the 30 fps claim official?
No. It comes from a creator relaying what he was told at the preview event. Rockstar has not confirmed a frame rate publicly, and the status of a 60 fps performance mode was described as uncertain.
